El Cid Resorts has just signed an agreement with OCEANUS, a non-profit organization based in Quintana Roo, Mexico that develops projects for the conservation of coral reefs. Our main objective will be to promote the recovery of reefs, reef communities and the coastal zone that has been damaged, transformed and/or destroyed by different factors. We will also work to increase the number of living and healthy coral colonies in a site susceptible to restoration.
Oceanus currently has a presence in 8 locations, including Cozumel and Puerto Morelos, where El Cid Resorts will be trained to care for these corals, as well as donating colonies to maintain the biodiversity of our oceans. We must remember that the presence of these species is an indicator of ecosystem health and habitat quality.

Since 2007, the Association has developed coral reef restoration techniques that include the installation of coral nurseries and the transplantation of colonies in selected sites along the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
To date, more than 70,000 colonies have been transplanted, with Restoration Programs being developed in at least 6 Marine Protected Areas in Mexico.
One of the most important pillars for us is Sustainability, with this agreement we will be able to conserve coastal and marine ecosystems. As well as:
- Preserving the country’s biological diversity
- Disseminate the importance of natural protected areas
- Increasing the number of coral colonies
- Joining Conservation programs
The conservation process is fundamental to our vision of sustainability. Due to the threats that reefs are subject to at local, regional and global levels; the impacts that reef development has had due to coastal development and the effects of climate change and intensity of use over the years, it is necessary and essential to carry out the rehabilitation of these colonies for the welfare of our planet.
